Logging your MSN/Windows Live Conversations

while MSN/Windows Live does save your logs automatically if set up to do so, you can use an add on to save your conversations for you so that they can be viewed anywhere.

if you want to save your chats within MSN/Windows Live all you have to do is firstly upgrade if you haven't done so already to the latest version of messenger ( current version Windows Live 9 also known as Window Live 2009 ) when you sign in and talk to someone and finish your conversation close the window and another window should appear asking what you like to do with your chat, it gives you two options -

  1. Yes - Please Save My Chats Logs
  2. No - Don't save my chat logs

if you choose to save logs then they will usually be stored on your Hard drive Under "My Documents ( Or Documents if your using Vista) > My Received Files and a folder inside that. all the logs are organized in month order so that you can see you talked to and on what month, also all files are labeled with the persons hotmail address ( or Yahoo! Address if they are using their Yahoo account on Windows Live ). these files are the chats and will open in a Internet Explorer window.

if you have upgraded and chose to not save your chat logs and are unsure where to go to re-enable them there is an add on to Windows Live and MSN messenger that allows you to save them ( and gives you some other extras that you could use for fun). This Add on is Called Messenger Plus, http://www.msgplus.net/, once you have downloaded this ( don't worry its Free ) click on the install button on your desktop and it will take you through the install after you have installed it will sign you out of messenger and allow you to sign back in. once you have signed back in it will pop up and allow you to edit messenger how you want it and chat logging is one of these options, just click it and click on anything else that takes your fancy if you become a bit more interested in it. if you aren't interested or just want to talk click next until it says you are complete and start talking.

if you want to re-enable the chat logs without installing the add-on all you have to do is either be signed in or about to sign in click on your status ( if you are signed out ) and click options > click messages and look down the page, it will say "message history" tick the box that says "automatically keep a history of my chats".
