HP 4050N series printer ghosting

over time and use, printers obviously become old and sometime unusable however what some fail to look at is what the problem is that they may be having at the time. with the HP 4050N laserjet it will "ghost" or appear to reprint the image done the left handside of the page there is a easy solution to this and it doenst require changing the toner.

It will cost a lot of money but all you have to do is change the fuser in the printer after this is done it will no longer "ghost" the image down the side of the page. The fuser can cost as little as £50 but this is off eBay. if you buy from a trusted supplier such as amazon it may cost you £170. the best option may be to buy a Maintenance kit from amazon that includes all you need including the fuser.

Using MSDOS to show, copy then import

If you are new to MSDOS it can be rather confusing but with a bit of practise and a lot of research on the internet you can learn how to use it and use it well.

Here is some commands you may find useful, it shows files that are on a particular Hard drive or Network drive. it can display system files and folders aswell as you own folders and files in your documents folder.

To Show documents in a DOS you have to either change the drive letter or type the directory of the drive letter. This can be done by either typing in:

D:\ , C:\, E:\.....ect, this command will change what what drive you are in as standard DOS is already in the C:\ drive, which appears as your "Local Drive" in "My Computer".

If you want to view the directory of a drive without changing the letter the command is:

Dir C:, Dir D:, Dir E:.....Ect. all you have to do is type "Dir" and the letter of the drive you wish to view the files of.

now for the copying of files from DOS to a document on your hard drive. this is simple if you know how and even if you dont know it will soon be easy enough for you to do. When you have the files of the drive you want in DOS the command to copy that information to a text file on your harddrive is:

Dir (Enter your Drive letter):\> (Enter the destination Drive Letter):\ mytext.txt

This command copies all the information from the drive you have specified to a document that it creates automatically to the destionation drive or folder.

if you are going to import that information to Microsoft Office programs, it can be as easy as just opening the file but sometime you will have to import the data. if you have used Office before, of which im sure you have, you'll be familiar with importing

If you need any extra help heres a good site:

Virus on the company network

A virus was introduced onto the ITSMAGIC network, this virus affected many computers. the problem is with the virus that was introduced was that effects .EXE files and .COM files, obviously if you are not familiar with these file types this is what they are:

.EXE: program files, this is the extension for you programs on your PC.
.COM: DOS command files, this is an extension that is used by DOS in windows and helps commands that are written in DOS.

The virus was called the "Gotcha" virus, this is brought onto networks via USB devices or portable devices. the way to stop this virus is to scan your devices before you take it to another computer, also scan your computer so that you dont put it back on the device. This virus has a few other effects beside just infecting files and stopping them from working it can also take upto 1024MB of RAM (thats 1GB!!!), if you dont have a Gigabyte of RAM installed on your computer you wont get past your boot up stage because the virus uses all the RAM when you boot.

one of the ways that you will find out if you have the virus is that if you go to print you may have the screen freeze and a message pop up reading "Gotcha", this is what the virus does and you will have to remove it quickly if you come across this as it spreads to program files and DOS.

Setting up your computer to lauch programs on log in or at a certain time

This method is for windows operating systems, more than likely XP as that is the operating system of choice for many.

many programs set up an auto start process when installed meaning that when you start your computer and log in that program is among, maybe many, to start.

if you want a standard windows game or application to start on log in of your windows session try this method.

1:Click start
2:Control panel > classic view to the left of your control panel window.
3:Scheduled Tasks > Open this
4:Double click on schedule task and follow the instructions on screen

Logging your MSN/Windows Live Conversations

while MSN/Windows Live does save your logs automatically if set up to do so, you can use an add on to save your conversations for you so that they can be viewed anywhere.

if you want to save your chats within MSN/Windows Live all you have to do is firstly upgrade if you haven't done so already to the latest version of messenger ( current version Windows Live 9 also known as Window Live 2009 ) when you sign in and talk to someone and finish your conversation close the window and another window should appear asking what you like to do with your chat, it gives you two options -

  1. Yes - Please Save My Chats Logs
  2. No - Don't save my chat logs

if you choose to save logs then they will usually be stored on your Hard drive Under "My Documents ( Or Documents if your using Vista) > My Received Files and a folder inside that. all the logs are organized in month order so that you can see you talked to and on what month, also all files are labeled with the persons hotmail address ( or Yahoo! Address if they are using their Yahoo account on Windows Live ). these files are the chats and will open in a Internet Explorer window.

if you have upgraded and chose to not save your chat logs and are unsure where to go to re-enable them there is an add on to Windows Live and MSN messenger that allows you to save them ( and gives you some other extras that you could use for fun). This Add on is Called Messenger Plus, http://www.msgplus.net/, once you have downloaded this ( don't worry its Free ) click on the install button on your desktop and it will take you through the install after you have installed it will sign you out of messenger and allow you to sign back in. once you have signed back in it will pop up and allow you to edit messenger how you want it and chat logging is one of these options, just click it and click on anything else that takes your fancy if you become a bit more interested in it. if you aren't interested or just want to talk click next until it says you are complete and start talking.

if you want to re-enable the chat logs without installing the add-on all you have to do is either be signed in or about to sign in click on your status ( if you are signed out ) and click options > click messages and look down the page, it will say "message history" tick the box that says "automatically keep a history of my chats".

Technical Support - Bob can't get Excel to print on one page

The link above takes you to the Microsoft website and a tutorial on printing in Excel. It explains everything you need to know about how to print to one page and more.

The screenshot shows the page that you would need to be on to get the information you need. It shows the Microsoft website (that is the same as the link) and its tutorial about printing Excel sheets.

One way to solve the problem of not being able to print on one page is to use the "fit to" feature in the "page setup" menu, this fits all information on the pages you've specified.

Another way to solve this problem is to present the information another way, that may be to have it in a slide show, this can be more effective.

Other communication methods that could be used might be to email the document to the person or people in question, this would allow for the document to be opened up in the meeting so that you can talk through what they can see on the screen, or possibly have it on a video blog which you could play back in the meeting alternatively he might just want to simply show the spreadsheet on a screen which might just be the easiest way to do it. These methods might be useful but sometimes can't be, for instance not everyone will get the email and the video file might not stream or the playback might not work very well. Displaying the spreadsheet on screen over a projector would be just as good a method as printing it out, if he prints out he would have the added security of having the document in case of there not be a projector in the room or he can't get the projector to work or doesn't know how to work it. alternatively he could go to the IT technicians and have them either set up a projector or have them print it out for him so that he can stop panicking about it, also he could have it on a external device such as Hard drive or pen drive and just display it on a computer screen or put it on the laptops that they are using and have them open the document and talk through it as they look on their own PC's.
